Pay attention to how you use pronouns. To prevent conflict and increase the odds that students will do what you want, reduce your use of the pronoun "you" and replace it with "I."
"Here is a suggestion I have about your report" is more effective than the accusatory "You shouldn't have done that."
"Why didn't you follow directions?" is not as effective as "Help me understand why the directions were not followed."
Replace the blaming Teacher Talk of "You did such and such" with "Here's my theory of what just occurred."
A manipulation of your use of pronouns will help you communicate with respect and get the behavior you desire.

I presented my "Celebrate the Spirit Whisperers" keynote address for the Corunna Public Schools staff this week in Michigan. As the participants checked in and filled out name tags, they were given a welcome packet that included an agenda, a pad of paper, a pen, and handouts for the various sessions going on throughout the day.
One item that surprised me was a 3x5 coupon on brightly colored paper. It informed staff, "This coupon can be used in exchange for FORGIVENESS of one big mistake or implementation effort that did not go as well as expected during the 2003-2004 school year." Spaces were provided for signatures of the person using the coupon and the person granting forgiveness. I kept mine in case I needed it.

The following award was presented to every student at the Honors Convocation at L'Anse Creuse High School in 1991. Although this award was presented at the end of the year, it might be just as effective in the beginning of the year. At times it is beneficial to begin where we ended. See what you think.
AWARD

Hello Chick,
I want to share with you something I have been doing in my class and in my life - eliminating words of judgment. I have really been concentrating on this, and it is unbelievable how judgmental our language is. Neil Donald Walsh, in one of his books, uses the terms "different," "what works," and "what doesn't work" to replace judgmental terms. I am finding the energy of the terms he suggests gives a much different feeling than judgmental words.
Today, in a faculty meeting regarding faculty survey results, I suggested the concept of "finding something different" because the results of the survey indicated that in one area, what we were doing "wasn't working." What a freeing exercise this has been in my life. I recommend it to all your readers.
