Frequently Asked Questions about Setting up a Literacy Day with Reese Haller

1. How do we invite Reese to our school?

We have created two easy ways for you to schedule Reese. You can request a Literacy Day and availability by emailing Reese at reese@reesehaller.com.  Reese’s dad, Thomas Haller, will return an email or phone call (if you prefer) to you within a day to discuss arrangements. Or you can call Personal Power Press toll-free: 877-360-1477.

2. How long is Reese’s presentation?

Reese has a 35 minute presentation on the 6 traits of writing and then answers question for an additional 10-15 minutes. He typically presents to one grade level at a time (sometimes grade levels are combined at smaller schools). It works best to schedule three grades levels before lunch and three after lunch. In that way Reese is in the building all day long. He loves to stop by the lunch room and enjoys light conversation and “school food” with his peers.

3. How far in advance do we need to book Reese?

The sooner the better. If you have a specific date that can not be altered, a year in advance is recommended. Otherwise, you run the risk of another school booking your date. If your date is flexible, less lead time is needed. Still, Reese books on a first come, first served basis. So call as soon as you know your date and he will hold it in pencil for you while you are deciding.

4. How many students can Reese accommodate?

Reese has addressed groups ranging in size from 5 to 1000. He can address any size group. What we have found to be the best arrangement for the students is that Reese present to each grade level (app. 25- 50 students). You can combine grade levels if your school is small. The smaller size helps the students feel more comfortable and tends to generate more questions at the end of Reese’s presentation.

5. How do you handle expenses?

You will be sent an invoice prior to the Literacy Day for the honorarium amount. That can be given to Thomas the day of the event. Travel expenses and charges will be calculated and billed to the organization at the conclusion of Reese’s return from the seminar. Travel expenses will include: mileage, airfare, meals, parking, car rentals, cab fares, and tolls for Reese and his dad, who accompanies him to every event.

6. How do we publicize this event?

Once you contract with Reese to do the date, he will send you a colorful flyer that you can use as a poster and as a note to go home with the students. He will also send you his bio and photo for you to use if you wish to contact the local media (TV or newspaper). You can also obtain additional information from his website at www.reesehaller.com Leave PPP.com.

7. Does Reese need any special audio visual equipment?

A good quality microphone system will enhance the effectiveness of your program. Audio needs vary depending on the size of the room and number of students in attendance. The most he would need would be an overhead projector and screen.

8. What about room arrangement?

Reese’s preference is to have a flat, level floor with movable chairs. A media center works better than an auditorium. No lunchroom tables, please! Chairs facing the front in a half circle, is preferred. Reese will present in your auditorium if necessary. If so, please block off the back rows with masking tape, rope, or signs so that the number of seats matches the expected size of the group. THIS IS CRITICAL. More attention, energy, interaction, response, and retention occur with a compact group.
