“A combination of verbal diseases identified and those same maladies cured. The Abracadabra Effect is about health, your health, my health and the health of all the people on this planet.”

“The Abracadabra Effect lays out a challenge to us all. Are we going to go on spreading dis-ease with our language or are we going to stop the unhealthy ways we speak, think, believe and act? What an opportunity we have to truly live responsible, empowered lives.”
Elvira Medus, LCSW
As a linguist, I am always observing how language is used by others. Abracadabra, however, opened my eyes to the way I use language. I can’t even say a simple phrase like, “That really makes me mad,” without evaluating my response to the situation and thinking about how I can change my language to facilitate a different response. Chick and Thomas talk about “The Makes Me Psychosis,” “Unabelism,” “Preventarrhea,” “Shoulditus,” and many other “dis-eases.” I was amazed at how many of them I used without even knowing it. This book provided me with the tools to adjust my language to become a more accountable, productive, and confident person!
